Comparison Questions

Introduction

Developing a comparison question that is appropriate to an examinee and case is perhaps the most challenging aspect of polygraphy, and its importance cannot be overstated. This NPC Polygraph Guide is designed to be a handy source to the competent polygrapher in this crucial process.

Because of differences among examinees and circumstances, no list of comparison questions could cover every possibility. Polygraph examiners are strongly encouraged to tailor their questions to the facts of the case and the characteristics of the examinee, and not simply cut and paste personal favorites into polygraph question lists. While examiners may find these questions very useful, they were designed primarily as potential areas for an examiner to explore when designing the final comparison question.

There is more than one school of thought about comparison questions; exclusionary, non- exclusionary, directed or probable lie. All of these types are included in this Polygraph Guide, so that examiners may choose those that fit their methods, and also to acquaint examiners with those in which they are less familiar.
