Privacy Policy for LXEdge Software

Question Last Updated on: 10/15/2026

Lafayette Instrument ("We") are committed to protecting and respecting your privacy.

This policy applies to any data you provide to us including personal or other sensitive data. Please read the following carefully to understand our practices regarding your data and how it will be handled. Using certain features of this software will require understanding and consenting to the practices described in this policy.

About LXEdge and This Policy
LXEdge is polygraph software for Microsoft Windows, used with Lafayette Instrument polygraph instruments. It is installed and operated by your organization on its own computers. This policy describes what information LXEdge collects, where that information is stored, and what information is sent to Lafayette Instrument Company. It does not cover our websites.

Information about the people you examine (examinees) is entered and recorded by your examiners and stored on your organization's computers, or in other locations your organization chooses. Lafayette Instrument Company does not host this information, does not receive it, and has no access to it unless you choose to send it to us, for example as part of a support request. Your organization decides what information to collect about examinees and is responsible for providing any required notice, obtaining any required consent, deciding how long to keep the information, and complying with the laws that apply to its examinations.

Information You Provide to Us
General usage of this software does not require submission of your personal or sensitive data to Lafayette Instrument Company.

You may optionally provide us with personal data by contacting us or by submitting a support request or error report from within the software, as described under Support Requests below. We use this information to respond to your request and to support and improve LXEdge. We do not share your data for any purposes.

Automatic Collection of Information
LXEdge does not contain advertising, analytics, or usage tracking, and it does not automatically send personal, examinee, or examination data to Lafayette Instrument Company.

LXEdge makes two automatic network requests to Lafayette Instrument Company:

  • Software update check. LXEdge asks our server whether a newer version of LXEdge is available. The request contains only the product name; the version comparison is done on your computer. The check runs when LXEdge starts and each time the About page is opened. You can stop the check at startup by turning off Update Software Notification under Settings > System > Application Status.
  • Instrument lease check. If a leased LX6 instrument is connected, LXEdge sends the instrument's serial number to our server to verify the lease. This check is required for a leased instrument to operate and cannot be turned off.

As with any internet connection, our servers can see the network address of the computer making these requests. These two requests are not sent over an encrypted connection. They do not include personal or examination data.

Collection of Examinee Data
In order to conduct, record, score, and review examinations, LXEdge stores information about each examinee in a case folder called a PF. The default Personal History form includes:

  • Identity: full name, date of birth, an identification number (such as a Social Security number), aliases, and case number
  • Contact and identification details: phone numbers, home address, and driver license number, state, country, and expiration date
  • Background: gender, race, marital status, education, birthplace, military history, family members (names, ages, occupations, and locations), and employment history
  • Comments and descriptions entered by the examiner

Only the examinee's full name is required. Your organization can change the forms, so the information actually collected may differ.

LXEdge also stores:

  • Exam (series) information, such as dates, location, the requester, recent sleep and meals, prior polygraph examinations, and pre-test questions and answers
  • Physiological recordings made by the polygraph instrument, such as respiration, electrodermal activity, cardiovascular activity and blood pressure, photoplethysmograph (PPG), and movement
  • Video and audio recordings and photos of the examination, when cameras or microphones are used. Recording starts only when the examiner starts it, or automatically if your organization turns on Automatically Start Recording, which is off by default.
  • Questions, scores, reviews, reports, and any attachments the examiner adds

The PF folder is named by the examiner and often contains the examinee's name. Examinee information is not submitted to Lafayette Instrument Company.

Collection of Examiner Data
LXEdge records who worked on a case so that changes can be traced. The Windows user name and the time are recorded in the PF when media, photos, or attachments are added and when a case is locked. While a case is open, LXEdge also records the computer name and Windows user name in the case folder so that other computers know the case is in use. Examiner and reviewer names entered in reviews and reports are stored with the case. LXEdge also keeps a local audit log of activity, such as cases being opened and closed, files being added and deleted, and changes to certain Personal History fields. This information stays on your computers and is not submitted to Lafayette Instrument Company.

Cameras and Recording Devices
LXEdge records from USB cameras and microphones attached to the computer and from network cameras that your organization configures. LXEdge connects only to the network camera addresses your organization enters. Saved camera passwords are protected using Windows data protection for the signed-in Windows user. Video and audio recordings are stored in the PF and are not sent to Lafayette Instrument Company.

Data Storage and Security
By default, LXEdge stores its data in the My LXEdge folder inside the Windows user's Documents folder. Your organization can choose a different location, including a network folder. If Windows is set up to keep the Documents folder in a cloud service such as OneDrive, LXEdge data stored there is synchronized by that service.

LXEdge stores case files, Personal History and series forms, question sets, physiological charts, reviews, the audit log, and the account file in an encrypted format. The following are stored without LXEdge encryption: video, audio, and photos; attachments, including printed PF documents, which can contain Personal History; reports; raw instrument data files; exported files; settings; and the diagnostic logs. LXEdge encryption is designed so that any LXEdge installation can open a case, so it is not a substitute for controlling access to the computer and its storage.

LXEdge does not have its own sign-in; access to LXEdge and its data is controlled by Windows sign-in. Lafayette Instrument recommends that you:

  • Use full-disk encryption, such as BitLocker, on every computer and drive that stores LXEdge data
  • Give each examiner their own Windows account and restrict access to the LXEdge data folders
  • Protect backups, archives, and network folders that contain LXEdge data in the same way

Diagnostic Logs
LXEdge keeps daily log files in the Logs folder inside My LXEdge to help diagnose problems. These logs may contain information entered into LXEdge, including examinee identifiers such as names, dates of birth, and identification numbers, as well as the names of case folders. Logs stay on your computer unless you send them to us with a support request.

Support Requests
You can contact Lafayette support from the About page using Contact Support. If LXEdge encounters an unexpected error, it offers to send an error report. Nothing is sent until you click Submit, and cancelling sends nothing. Submissions are sent to Lafayette Instrument Company over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection.

A support request or error report can include:

  • The name, email address, phone number, and message you enter. These are optional for error reports.
  • The LXEdge version
  • A copy of the current day's diagnostic log. Before it is attached, LXEdge replaces folder and file names, including case folder names, and the Windows user name with placeholders. Other log content is not removed and may include examinee information, as described under Diagnostic Logs.
  • For error reports, a description of the error, which may include file and folder names
  • If you check Attach PF, a copy of the open PF. Attach PF is unchecked by default. Personal information is removed from this copy according to your Remove personal information and other data settings, but the copy keeps the PF name and the physiological recordings.
  • Any files you choose to add

The files to be sent are listed before you submit, and you can remove optional files from the list. If online submission fails, Manual Submit creates an email message addressed to LXSupport@lafayetteinstrument.com in your email application, which you can review and send yourself. After a successful submission, the contact details you entered are saved on your computer so that you do not have to enter them again.

We use support submissions to respond to your request and to support and improve LXEdge. We do not share your data for any purposes.

Exported Data
Data stored in LXEdge can be optionally exported for storage, transfer, or emailing. Exported data may include personal or sensitive data.

  • Email, in PF Tools, attaches an archive of the selected PFs to a new message and opens it in your email application. LXEdge does not send email itself, and nothing is sent to Lafayette Instrument Company. Your email provider determines how the message is transmitted.
  • Archive saves PFs as an LXEdge archive (.lxaz) file.
  • Upload copies a PF to a network folder chosen by your organization.
  • Print PF creates a PDF document, which can include Personal History.
  • Other exports create data files for use with scoring and analysis software.

When emailing, archiving, or uploading, LXEdge can remove personal information and other data, such as Personal History, media, attachments, reports, and question text. This option is on by default. It does not remove the PF name or the physiological recordings, and Upload Without Stripping copies the PF without removing anything.

PF Tools can password protect an archive with a password you choose; LXEdge does not store the password. Password protection is off by default. An archive without password protection is a standard compressed file and is not encrypted. Printed and exported files are not encrypted by LXEdge. Your organization is responsible for protecting exported data and for choosing secure ways to send it.

Data Retention
LXEdge stores data on your computers until it is deleted. It does not automatically delete PFs, recordings, or archives. LXEdge keeps the 10 most recent daily diagnostic logs and the 365 most recent daily audit logs, and deletes older ones. Copies that LXEdge creates, such as archives, backup copies of PFs made when converting them to a newer format (Legacy PFs), and copies prepared for email or support requests, remain until you delete them. Uninstalling LXEdge does not remove the My LXEdge folder, settings, or other LXEdge data. Your organization is responsible for deciding how long to keep examination data.

Data Deletion
Examinee data is stored only on your organization's computers and in the locations your organization chooses. Examinees who want their data deleted should contact the organization that conducted the examination; Lafayette Instrument Company cannot access or delete it.

  • Delete on the Home page permanently deletes the PF folder and everything in it, after you confirm. The PF is not moved to the Recycle Bin, and Lafayette Instrument Company cannot recover it.
  • Delete in PF Tools moves the selected PFs to the Windows Recycle Bin. Empty the Recycle Bin to delete them permanently.
  • Deleting an attachment or photo from a PF permanently deletes the file.
  • Deleting a chart removes it from the case, but the recorded chart files remain in the PF folder until the PF itself is deleted.
  • LXEdge deletes files using standard Windows file deletion. It does not overwrite or securely erase them. If your organization requires deleted data to be unrecoverable, it is responsible for applying appropriate media sanitization to the affected storage.

To remove all LXEdge data from a computer, delete the My LXEdge folder (or the data folder your organization chose), along with any archives, uploaded copies, and backups. To delete information you sent to Lafayette Instrument Company in a support request, contact us using the information below.

Children's Information
LXEdge is professional software for trained examiners and is not directed to children. Organizations that examine minors are responsible for obtaining any consent required by law. Lafayette Instrument Company does not knowingly collect information about children. If information about a child is included in a support request sent to us, contact us to have it deleted.

Your Choices and Requests
You may contact us at any time to ask what information you have sent us in support requests, to correct it, or to have it deleted. Requests about examination data stored in LXEdge should be directed to the organization that conducted the examination, because that information is held only by that organization.

Where Information Is Processed
Lafayette Instrument Company is located in the United States. Support requests and the update and lease checks described above are received and processed in the United States.

Changes to our Privacy Policy
Any changes we may make to our privacy policy in the future will be posted on this page, along with the date of the update.
